The climb up to the 13th-century medieval fortress on its rocky headland, with views over two bays at once, the Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) by the harbour, and the healing stalactite cave of Damlataş. The Alanya classics, and the right place to start with the city.

How it works
Pickup at your hotel, then up the castle hill by coach. We walk the walls of the 13th-century citadel with its panorama over the peninsula, Cleopatra Beach and the port, then descend to the octagonal Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) by the harbour. The finale is the Damlataş cave with its stalactites, where the humidity is around 95% and the air is considered good for the lungs. Free time by the harbour.

The views from the fortress over two bays are postcard material. In the Damlataş cave it really is easier to breathe — damp and cool. The Red Tower by the harbour is lovely.

A good start to getting to know the city, and the guide told it well. It really is worth taking a jumper for the cave.

A decent overview of Alanya. The cable car to the headland costs extra — we thought it was included, it is not. There was barely any time at the harbour.
