How it works

An early start: the drive from Antalya to Pamukkale takes about 3 hours over a mountain pass with comfort stops. On arrival we climb to the terraces and walk barefoot across the warm travertines (shoes are carried in hand — the site's conservation rules require it), then explore the ancient city of Hierapolis with its amphitheatre and necropolis. Lunch is a buffet at a local restaurant. We head back in the evening.

The white terraces look like snow in summer. Walking barefoot through the warm water is indescribable. Hierapolis next door impressed us with its amphitheatre. It is a long day, but it is worth it.

The buffet lunch was fine and the drive had stops along the way. The travertines are worth getting up early for.

A top spot, but a 5 a.m. start and 3 hours of driving each way are exhausting. Cleopatra's Pool is a separate ticket at around 1,300 lira — worth knowing in advance. The guide was great.
